Migration to AVEVA Marine 12

Postby mervonmaa » Mon Mar 23, 2009 9:52 pm

Hello All,

Out of curiosity and because the new software has been released more than year ago: I'm wondering if anyone, especially European customers, has been testing it and/or planning to migrate in the near future?

I think it's better be safe than sorry, ie. wait until the biggest bugs and/or issues are solved in later versions/service packs.

As for as I know, AVEVA Marine 12 does not bring much "bang for the buck" for current M3 users. For Outfitting users it's totally brand new product (PDMS) and if PML/PML2 is used instead of Python, there will be a long learning curve and all Outfitting tools need to be re-developed.

All in all, it looks like everyone's kind of waiting what happens in the near future.

Well, actually AM 12.0 is a serious step forwad, not only comparing with Tribon (Hull), but also with Vantage (Outfit).
And I'm not comparing Tribon Outfit and AM Outfitting - after working a while with AVEVA new products I have to admit that Tribon Outfit is loosing at almost any aspect when comparing with PDMS, sorry.

The learning curve can be long, or quite short, depending on people, as usual. 8)

IMO these are to be done:
- for Initial Design/Hull: arrange to train just few people (but some of the best in Tribon); this can be done in one week or less. Then start testing, on a real project, developed in paralel in Tribon.
- for Outfit: at least a basic training (2-3 weeks) is to be done. Then pick an area, one of the most complex(!) you have on an actual project, and start working.
- during this process you have to ask for close assistance from AVEVA.

At the end, compare results from the both system (Tribon vs. AM) and draw your own conclusions, to migrate sooner or later to AM (but I think will be sooner).

Regards,
Dragos

IMHO the biggest difference between VANTAGE Marine 11.6 and AVEVA Marine 12 is that now both Hull and Outfit have common databanks (Dabacon), and no transfer between Hull and Outfit is needed as it was the case in 11.6.

As for the M3 Hull end-user the change is not that drastic, ie. the graphical interface, including menu structure is pretty much the same as it was in M3. Maybe the biggest difference is to use Assembly Planning / Weld Planning and get used to it's new interface, which is the same old "PDMS View", which PDMS users are used to.

As mentioned earlier it's the M3 Outfit users who will have the biggest challenge learning to use the new software, which is PDMS since Tribon Outfit does not exist no more in AVEVA Marine.
